Lesson Text: II Peter 1:3-14

King James Version(KJV)

I. DIVINE POWER (II Peter 1:3-4)

3. According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:

4. Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

II. DISCIPLESHIP PRIORITIES (II Peter 1: 5-9)

5. And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;

6. And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;

7. And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.

8. For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

9. But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.

III. DILIGENT PERSEVERANCE (II Peter 1:10-11)

10. Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:

11. For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

IV. DEPARTURE PREDICTED (II Peter 1:12-14)

12. Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth.

13. Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance;

14. Knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me.

New International Version (NIV)

I. DIVINE POWER (II Peter 1:3-4)

3. His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.

4. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

II. DISCIPLESHIP PRIORITIES (II Peter 1: 5-9)

5. For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge;

6. and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness;

7. and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.

8. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

9. But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins.

III. DILIGENT PERSEVERANCE (II Peter 1:10-11)

10. Therefore, my brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble,

11. and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

IV. DEPARTURE PREDICTED (II Peter 1:12-14)

12. So I will always remind you of these things, even though you know them and are firmly established in the truth you now have.

13. I think it is right to refresh your memory as long as I live in the tent of this body,

14. because I know that I will soon put it aside, as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.

PRACTICAL POINTS FOR DISCUSSION:

No one has been given more faith than anyone else, for we all were given a measure of precious faith (II Peter 1:1; Romans 12:3).
God’s grace and peace can be multiplied in us as we know Him better (II Peter 1:2).
God gives His children all the things necessary to live for Him; we just need to apply what He supplies (II Peter 1:3; Deuteronomy 2:7).
Since a promise is only as sure as the one who makes it, we need never fear receiving what God has promised (II Peter 1:4).
The Christian life is not a life of luxury; it requires diligent effort to grow to maturity (II Peter 1:5-9; Philippians 2:12).
Continued diligence is evidence that we are the children of God (II Peter 1:10-11; Matthew 24:13).
We should strive or endeavor to help others persevere in the faith (II Peter 1:12-14; I Thessalonians 5:11).
