“We love because He first loved us.” -1 John 4:19
There is something powerful that happens when you know you are deeply loved.
The apostle John tells us that our love for God begins with His love for us. He loved us first. Before you ever prayed a prayer, before you ever considered serving Him, before you even understood what grace meant — He loved you.
And when that love truly sinks in, it changes you-it doesn’t just comfort you; it doesn’t just stir you; it awakens something inside you that moves you into action.
By our fallen nature we do not naturally love God back. We wander. We resist. We chase lesser things. But when Christ saves us, He does more than forgive us — He gives us a new nature, a new heart. He awakens us. He restores our design. We were created to reflect His love back to Him, and through Jesus, that design comes alive again. Rather than wander, we seek Him. Rather than resist His will, we yield to it. Rather than to choose lesser things, we choose Him.
That is what love does — it excites obedience.
Realizing what He has done for you — how He forgave you, pursued you, restored you — makes something rise in your heart. Like the psalmist in Psalm 116, you begin to say, “What shall I give to the Lord for all He has done for me?” And then with joy, “O Lord, I am Your servant… You have freed me.”
Notice that word: freed.
God’s love does not trap you. It frees you. And once you are free, you want to belong to Him. You want your life to matter for Him. You want to serve not because you have to, but because you get to.
That’s our objective. That’s God’s objective — not forced commitment, but awakened affection.
Today, slow down and receive His love again. Let it warm the places that have grown cold. Let it soften the places that have grown tired. Let it remind you that you are chosen, forgiven, and deeply cherished.
Then whisper this simple prayer:
“Thank you, Lord!”
When His love truly captures your heart, serving Him will not feel heavy.
It will feel like joy..and that joy will move you.
Consider…
1 John 4:19 says, “We love because He first loved us.” In what ways have you personally experienced God’s love in your life?
When you think about Jesus restoring Peter in John 21:15–17, what stands out to you about how Jesus connects love and service?
Psalm 116 expresses joyful gratitude: “What shall I render to the Lord for all His benefits to me?” What has God done for you that stirs gratitude in your heart?
Are there areas where your service to God has felt more like pressure than joy? What might change if you served from love instead of obligation?
If you truly believed you were completely loved and freed by God, what step of obedience or service would excite you rather than intimidate you?

Father,
Thank You for loving me first. Thank You for pursuing me, forgiving me, and restoring me through Jesus. Your love has reached me in ways I did not deserve, and I am grateful.
Sometimes my heart grows distracted or tired. Sometimes I forget what You have done for me. Today, I ask You to awaken my love again. Let Your kindness stir something fresh inside me.
Free me from serving out of guilt or pressure. Teach me to serve out of joy. As You restored Peter and invited him to care for Your sheep, restore and invite me. Show me how to love what You love. Show me how to care about what You care about.
You have loosed my bonds. I belong to You. Help my life reflect that belonging. Excite my heart with the privilege of serving You.
I love You because You first loved me.
Lead me in Your will.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
