Mark tells us that when Jesus appointed the Twelve, He called them “that they might be **with Him** and that He might **send them out** to preach and to have authority.”  -Mark 3:14–15

Notice the order: with Him, then sent by Him.

From the very beginning, Jesus made it clear that discipleship is both presence and purpose. We are invited into relationship with Him, and we are entrusted with ministry for Him. God desires that we grow in Him *and* go for Him.

Yet many of us drift toward one side or the other.

In Luke 10:38–42, we meet Mary and Martha. Martha busied herself serving Jesus & the disciples. Mary sat at His feet, listening to His teaching. When Martha became frustrated, Jesus gently affirmed that Mary had chosen “what is better.”  Jesus’ response to Martha maade it clear that spending time with Him takes precedence over the work, but that doesn’t mean that service is wrong.  After all, someone had to prepare the meal. Jesus never rebuked Martha for what she was doing in the kitchen.  Martha’s mistake was not serving — it was prioritizing the work over the Word. And Mary’s posture, though beautiful, was not meant to exclude future action.

Both sisters leaned heavily to one side. Jesus calls us to hold both together while trusting in Him.

It is easy to become Martha — active, committed, even exhausted — doing things *for* God without slowing down to be *with* Him. It is also possible to remain comfortable at Jesus’ feet, soaking in truth, yet hesitating to step into obedience when He says, “Go.”

Mark 3 shows us the rhythm Jesus intends: intimacy that fuels mission.

The truth is, God’s will is impossible to carry out without God’s help. We cannot produce spiritual fruit through human strength. We cannot manufacture wisdom, patience, endurance, or power. That is why Paul prayed in Colossians 1:9–12 that believers would be filled with the knowledge of God’s will “through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives,” so that they might live lives worthy of the Lord and bear fruit in every good work.

Did you notice? Filled first. Fruitful second.

James 1:22 reminds us to be doers of the Word, not hearers only. But being a “doer” does not mean running ahead of God. It means responding to Him. It means allowing His Word to shape us inwardly before it is expressed outwardly.

God knows how to balance being with Him and being sent by Him – trust Him.

You and I will lean too far one way if left to ourselves. We will either burn out in activity or drift into passivity. But when we trust Him — when we admit our need — He provides grace. He teaches us when to sit and when to stand. When to listen and when to speak. When to wait and when to move.

Are you weary from serving without resting?  Or hesitant to serve because it feels overwhelming?  Today, be honest with Him. Tell Him. He already knows.

Then ask Him to do what only He can do — to make His will possible in your life. Ask Him to deepen your relationship with Him. Ask Him to make you willing to serve on His behalf. Ask Him to protect your time with Him even as you step into ministry for Him.  Jesus did not call the disciples simply to work. He called them to Himself – and from that place of closeness, He sent them.

He is calling you the same way — to be with Him and to be sent by Him. Trust Him to teach you how to do both.

Reflections

  1. In Mark 3:14–15, Jesus called the disciples first to be with Him and then to be sent out. Which of those two rhythms — being with Him or going for Him — comes more naturally to you? Which is more challenging?
  2. Reflecting on Mary and Martha in Luke 10:38–42, do you tend to lean more toward activity or attentiveness? How has that tendency affected your relationship with God?
  3. Colossians 1:9–12 speaks of being filled with spiritual wisdom before bearing fruit. Where in your life do you need to seek God’s filling before stepping forward in action?
  4. James 1:22 calls us to be doers of the Word. Is there something God has already shown you that requires simple obedience?
  5. What practical step could you take this week to protect time with God while also remaining open and willing to serve Him?

Prayer

Father,

Thank You for calling me not only to serve You, but to be with You. You desire relationship before performance, intimacy before activity.

I confess that I often lean too far in one direction. Sometimes I get busy and forget to sit at Your feet. Other times I hesitate to act because I feel inadequate or afraid. I need Your help to walk in the balance You desire.

Teach me Your rhythm — when to be still and when to step forward, when to listen and when to act. Protect my time with You, and make me willing to be sent by You.

I cannot carry out Your will without Your grace. So I trust You to make possible what You have called me to do.

Keep me close to You.
And send me in Your name.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
